Transponder Key Programming
Since the remote starter was installed last month, the original key has started acting strangely, the car catches on the first turn some mornings and refuses outright on others. Nothing about the key itself changed, but whatever the installer touched under…
Transponder Key Programming
In plain words
Transponder-based immobilizers became mandatory equipment on new vehicles sold across the country from September 2007 onward, though many manufacturers had already been fitting them for years before that date. Practically, this means most vehicles on the road today, whatever their age, already expect a key that carries a chip rather than a plain metal blade. A locksmith working on an older, pre-transponder vehicle follows a noticeably different process than one working on a car built after that standard became routine.
How the visit goesThe blade snapped off flush with the door lock last winter, and the shop that cut a replacement only matched the metal shape. The fob still locks and unlocks the doors from across the driveway, but the engine cranks over and over without ever catching.

How the visit goes
Counting the keys that still work
The next question is not about the lock but about the keys: how many currently work, whether one was lost or stolen, and whether every key for the vehicle is genuinely gone. A single missing key changes little beyond adding a spare and clearing its old identity. All keys lost changes the whole visit, since there is nothing left to prove the system already trusts, and the work has to start by re-establishing that trust before a single new key can be written.
Cutting the blade first
The mechanical side of the job comes first and is the more familiar half of it: the blade is cut to the lock's own pattern, either from a code on file or by duplicating a working key, and fitted into a blank carrying the correct chip. A perfectly cut blade still will not start a vehicle with an immobilizer on its own, which is the detail that catches out a counter kiosk. The two halves of the key are treated as separate tasks throughout, cut first, chip second.
A record of what is active now
Once the work is finished, it helps to know exactly what is true about the vehicle's keys: how many now work, which one was cleared from memory, and which functions were paired to which fob. This is a short, plain account rather than a technical log, useful for a household sorting out who holds which key, or for anyone handling the vehicle later who needs to know it was recently reprogrammed rather than untouched since it left the factory floor.

What affects the quote
Same fees day, night or weekend
1Distance to where the vehicle is parked
Since the visit travels to the vehicle rather than the other way around, how far that is factors into the visit the same way it would for any other call that has to reach a specific location.
2How the vehicle's key list is reached
Some vehicles allow direct access through the onboard diagnostic port, while others gate that list behind a manufacturer-level security session that takes additional steps to establish. Which situation applies to a given vehicle affects how the visit is scoped.
3Whether any working key remains
Adding a spare or a driver's key with an existing key on hand is a more contained job than an all-keys-lost situation, which needs its own extended process to re-establish trust with the vehicle before anything new can be written.
Transponder Key Programming: questions
Does cold weather affect a key or its fob?
The metal blade and the passive chip inside it are not affected by cold. The fob's battery is a different story: cold weather reduces a battery's effective output, which can turn a marginally weak battery into one that suddenly stops responding on a cold morning. Testing a fob's battery before winter sets in catches this early.
What's the difference between cutting a key and programming it?
Cutting shapes a blank to match the lock, so it turns the mechanical cylinder in the door or ignition. Programming is a separate step where the chip inside the key head is taught to the vehicle's immobilizer, so the engine agrees to start. A key can be cut perfectly and still fail to start the car if that second step was skipped, which is the single most common source of confusion in this service.
Is there a difference between a factory key and an aftermarket one?
The chip family and the way it is programmed matter far more than where the blank itself was made. An aftermarket chip built for the correct family can work exactly as well as an original one, provided it is genuinely compatible with that vehicle's immobilizer, which is confirmed before it is cut and written rather than assumed.
